Rise of THE Print

Many years in the making, African print is being incorporated into African American fashion across the United States.

I remember a few years back Beyonce and her dancers, while on tour, wore African print. Last week during Black Girls Rock African women throughout the US went amuck when they saw “their” prints on stage — Iyanlya Vanzant and Lauryn Hill’s dancers rocked African print skirts.

African print is being seamlessly incorporated into urban fashion and it seems like most people aren’t even taking notice. Is it a reflection of a silent movement where African Americans are reconnecting with their “roots” or is it simply an affinity toward the vibrant bright colors and patterns, which traditionally make up African print. Either way, I am glad to see folks finally recognizing something I’ve always known…Africans and our culture ROCK.
